# Another MCP server

Many systems offer their own [MCP](https://modelcontextprotocol.io) server: a project manager, a CRM, a database. If your company uses such a system, you connect its server to the Gateway. Your agents use the tools of that server through the same connector, with the same activity log and the same access level.

## Connect

In **Connections**, click **Custom MCP server**.

1. **Service name**: the name that the agents and the log show (for example `Linear`).
2. **MCP server URL**: the address that the system gives in its documentation.
3. **Authentication**: how the server expects the sign-in.

| Option | When to use it |
| --------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Sign in (OAuth)** | The server has its own sign-in. The Gateway opens the sign-in page of the system. Sign in and approve. |
| **API token** | The system gave you a token. The Gateway sends the token as `Authorization: Bearer`. |
| **Custom headers** | The server expects a header with a different name. Enter the name and the value of each header. |
| **No authentication** | Only for servers on a private network, without sign-in. |

Click **Connect**. The Gateway calls the server and lists its tools. If the server does not answer, the Gateway saves the connection and shows the error. Correct the address or the authentication and try again.

## Read and write

The Gateway classifies each tool of the server as read or write, with what the server declares. If the server declares nothing, the Gateway classifies by the name of the tool. An access level with **read only** in the service calls only the read tools.

## Private or shared account

The connection is yours. Only your agents use it. You can select **Share with the organization**: then the agents of all the members use it, with the same account.

## If it does not work

| Message | What to do |
| ---------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| "Saved, but the server did not answer" | Check the URL and the authentication. Some servers need a path at the end of the address, for example `/mcp`. |
| The sign-in (OAuth) does not open | The server does not offer OAuth at that address. Use an API token. |
| The tools do not appear in the assistant | The access level of the agent does not include this service. Ask the admin. |
